Individual Evaluation - Remi Rodney

This is my independent evaluation, The questions I will be examining and answering are In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?&nbsp How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?  What have you learned from your audience feedback? How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Ideas that you might want to mention are: Target Audience Controversy How the video can be improved Audience perception&nbsp The aim of our project was to create a music video of an artist of our choice. We had to create an album cover, website and music video for our selected artist(s). Our target audience is teens to mid-twenties aged 16 to 26 and also though that are interested in this genre of music. The song that we chose was a duet by Usher and R.Kelly "Same Girl". This song is a duet so we knew that it was going to be a challenge to use. we all knew the song well and had seen the video many times so we each had a ruff idea of how our video project will go and what we will need to complete it. We had to create a video that challenges conventional real media products in many ways. Our Music video develops, challenges conventional real media products in many ways. Mainly it challenges the original music video straight of the boat. in the original music video Usher and R.Kelly are both black artists. in our music video Usher is white and R.Kelly is still black. This challenges the video as there is a change of race. An average white person in the situation they are in the song wouldn't talk like that or use those words. Using both white and black actors appeal two two genres widening our target audience increasing views. Rnb/rap is usually portrayed as low culture. And the use of high class props and costumes and the upper class lifestyle we showed questions this traditional label of low class culture. It in fact  highlights the facts that high and low culture doesn't actually exist and it is all lies.  Also we our characters are quite young which again challenges the original song. teenagers wouldn't be talking about marriage or potential wives. Another challenge that we have arisen is the use of upper class venues, clothing and props that we have used. Teenagers (again referring to age) wouldn't been seen in upper class restaurants or driving around in upper class vehicles, it goes against the norm.  we used a popular and widely used method of emphasis called fragmentation. This was very effective as it focus on specific body parts of our girl for example. We showed clips focusing on our girls lips creating the sense of seduction. To create that sense of sexual identification (staying within our given boundaries) we dressed our girl in red. Red stands out and also our girl being blonde it makes her look sexy, which was the image we were we going for. We also showed her walking slowly towards the camera swinging her hips yet again making her look sexy. All this use of sexiness attracts and appeals to teenage boys which is included in our target audience.

The combination of our main product and ancillary texts go together very well. We set ourselves a personal goal to keep a basic but important link within our work and products. We kept a house style (That consisted of colour), that was used throughout all of our products which gave it that immediate link. Our colours chosen also relate to the genre we are representing allowing our audience to know exactly what to expect.  we also used the same font was carried throughout.

We used the same image thorough out our media products to keep that sense of house style and class.
Our album to the right here shows our controversial portrayal of usher and R.Kelly.

Another link that was used within our products is that they each advertise each other. for example our website has our music video on it and all of our album art and other products.
Our Cd cover links all of media products just as well as our other products. The QR code in the bottom left hand corner of the backside of the album cover can be scanned at it will link you to exclusive content and to the website.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I have learned from our audience feedback that it was a big hit with our target audience. They were attracted to the music video and the genre of music, with smiles on their faces and excitement in their eyes. They loved the use of luxury used within in our video, particularly the high caliber restaurants, cars and dress sense. They were very interested and cant wait to see another Video produced by us.

Media technologies played a big part within the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages.
In our research, we have used digital media technologies such as macs and Youtube including other internet sites such as  www.musicmetric.com to research music videos and relevant information needed. In production we used a cannon SLR 1080p camera to record our film clips. We use Adobe premiere to edit these clips and create our music video for our target audience. We used the webcam on the mac to video our audience testing within the process. For our ancillary tasks we used Photoshop to edit our images to spec. To track our progress we used blogger to create a database of ideas and research.

Personal evaluation

Personally i am very happy with our final outcome with our media products, i feel that do exactly what they are supposed to do. The film was a great success and enjoyable during the process minusing the lengthiness of editing and lip syncing.

Evaluation - Celebrity Image

This our Celebrity image podcast, explaining the image and theme we were going for to promote the celebrities.

Evaluation - Importance Of Technology In Media

Using technology in Media is very important as we would have not been able to create a music video to a high standard like ours. Technology is really important in media as without it, people would never be able to create anything for example we would have not been able to complete our planning or our construction as for both we needed our Mac computers. Overall technology is the biggest factor in media and without it people would never be able to create anything.

Here we talk about the technologies we have incorporated into our project and what we have used and their importance to completing our product.

Evaluation - Website analysis

Website Analysis

To create our website we had to look at the real usher and R'kellys' website.
Looking at their website was very inspirational as it really set us off for what we needed to create and promote.

Within our website we had to create character representation in many ways through photos for example usher and R'kelly  both have images of themselves looking sophisticated. Usher has an image of himself wearing glasses, and smart casual clothing.

R'kelly has an image of himself in smart sunglasses next to a book which yet again gives the images of sophistication.

Usher and R'kelly also capture the representation of being hard workers Usher has a picture of him working hard in the studio which will relate back to fans as their idols are working hard to please them.

R'Kelly is shown  here to the left putting his all in during a concert. The fans will appreciate this and love him more.

Usher and R'Kelly Have yet still another representation other than sophisticated and a hard worker, they both has the representation of cool/hard which the fans love as every girl loves a bad boy.

Planning - Organisation Within The Group

As a group to keep organised we had to make a calendar which worked around each others schedules as members of the group had part-time jobs to sustain and some members had sporting activities that they attended every week so that day was un available to film or get together to do work.

Decision making
Decision making was a big factor in this whole project, we had troubles getting to a final decision, but we got to the end by doing some simple things. we all sat down as a group steam rolling what we had to do. We made a calendar and stuck to it as much as we could. this really helped with decision making as on our calendar we stated what we were doing on that perticular day.

Last year we struggled to keep organised and doing this for the second year we can clearly see the importance now. We made a calendar last year but the calendar lacked detail which made it difficult to know exactly what to do on those specific days. this then wasted a lot of time which led to cramming things in which wasn't good for the group.

Planning - R.Kelly Fan Demographics - Music Metric Rank

This Demographic shows us how high R.Kelly is considered to be ranked. R.Kelly is currently ranked 256th as of today in the world. this is very good considering how many artist there are in the world and the range of genres there are out there. It also shows how much his rank has gone up from yesterday which is also usefull as it gives us confidence that our artist will be a big hit.

Planning - R.Kelly Fan Demographiocs - Social Media

The fan demographics tells us that the fans use the internet and social networkintg sites  such as facebook, myspace to follow and listen their favourite artists. according to www.musicmetric.com people follow/interact with Rkellty the most on facebook 1.7m and the least on youtube 40.4k. From these demographics we understand to promote our artist more on facebook.

Planning - Music Videos History1970's

The 1970' s it was very controversial as glam rock came out. glam rock promoted homosexuality and this created arguments and problems within the era. Bands that were on the top of the charts started to use glam rock styled videos which made their music even more popular. bands also used them to keep their fans happy and occupied while they were away on tour. as glam rock pushed the boundaries of sexuality they also started to use special effects which was new and exciting.

This video by david bowie is very controversial as he is dressed as a women and wearing makeup.

Planning - Music Video History 1920's

In the 1920's the real early ages of the modern day music videos began. They were very basic by combining a silent movie or film clip with the soundtrack playing at the same time. These early forms of music videos were called Soundies.

This is a 1920's soundie. The music is played over the top of a scene from a film.

Planning - Aspects Of Music Videos

Music videos are generally a visual interpretation of a song from the artist. Music videos are normally short round about 3-5 minutes long.

If the song is longer then there are often compressed.
There are many reasons for this; firstly psychological and economical this means that....... It is also so that music video channels are able to play as many songs in the shortest amount of time possible, as the more songs they put up of different artist they will gain more money out of it.

It also avoids tune outs. It has been proven that it takes 3-5 seconds for human beings to change the channel if they believe that it is boring.
Music has developed as television is essentially a free method of entertainment. You are also able to do many things while listening to music, there is no actual reason for us to have to pay attention to what is going on in the video.

As a group we believe that music videos that due to the length of the video being so short, we have no time to properly develop characters, instead what we are receiving is a persona. ( A persona is......)
When music videos tell a story there is usually a narrative which is being told. There are able to this by having multiple clips being shot and edited together.
