Individual Evaluation - Vilson Nikolli

This is my independent evaluation, The questions I will be examining and answering are;  In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?  What have you learned from your audience feedback?  How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?  Ideas that I want to touch upon are:  Target Audience Controversy How the video can be improved, Audience perception & In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product was based on developing and producing a music video debuting a new single by an artist of our choice in this case, Usher and R.Kellys single; Same Girl. With this musci video we also had to create a whole package which includes the promotion of the artists and thier single. We challenged conventional media textxs in several ways, one way was in the depiction of the artists, we used two artists from different races and background to break from the usual tradition of the lead acting roles, it also differed from the actual artists who are both black and can be seen as breaking conformity and quite postmodern in the sense that it was controversial.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The combination between our main product and ancillary texts shows a cohesiveness as it throughout follows the theme we aimed for which is the lavish, stylish lifestyle. The colours and fonts used throughtout these text have been intergrated into the way the main product, the music video, looks and feels. The use of props and clothing has shown relationships with the fonts used in for example the CD cover, where they are indirectly connected through one facet being the stylish look. The effectiveness of this combination can also be seen through our webpage where it uses the same fonts and colours portrayed in the CD cover and thus continues with this image we are promoting.

What have you learned from the audience feedback?

I have learnt through audience feedback that our video was  generally recieved positively but there were some criticisms. Our video was said to contain a few flaws, some transitions were not very fluid and the continuity a bit jarring, for example as someone pointed out at 3.22 in the video the transition did not look smooth but somewhat dragged the viewer out of the experience. It has taught me that even the slightest bit of poor editing can significantly enhance or downgrade the viewers experience.  I have also learnt that however linear a story is in a music video it is still essential to convey a message and evoke emotions from the audience, it is better to keep the story in a music video linear and simple as people tend to watch music videos more so for the entertainment ontop of the actual song and not for a very composed and intricate story. I have also learnt that green screens in our music videos wasnt up to industry standard CGI however it is understandable as we havent got the resources or the time to make the CGI look to such a high quality however CGI can also enhance the experience for a viewer but can also detract from it if it is poorly edited and if it has no or little relevance to the scene for example the CGI used in our music video was of black polka dots and a white background and this didnt really mesh with the image we were trying to onvey. However other than those technical aspects the feedback was positive, we were praised for the types of shots used e.g. high angle, fragmentation etc, and the lip syncing and acting was great. The continuity bar from one moment was spot on and it all flowed well.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In the construction and research phase of our product we had to utilise various facets of media technologies such as programmes like Internet explorer and within it the websites such as facebook, prezi, survey monkey etc that helped us reasearch and gain a idea on who watches these videos, who are the artists fanbase e.g. are they more likely to be girls or guys, what age, where from, all these minute details were researched upon so we could get the best possible idea of what we were going to do to cater to our audience. This helped us later in the production of the video as we incorporated the brands such as Ralph Lauren being sported by the artists in the video, that could relate to the fanbase of young, 16-24 year olds who are currently wearing these brands as it is in fashion. These minior point helped relate the product, music video to the audience and make them care even on a superficial level more about the video and peak thier intrests. In the planning and evaluation stages programmes such as Iweb, Prezi, Adobe Premier, were being used more regurlarly as we were planning on the production of our video and we had to show the steps we took to get to the final product. Prezi was used to show different facets of our overall package for example a Prezi was created to show step by step instructions on how to add and layer music and special effects onto the video, adobe premier was the base as it contained the area in which we could edit the video to get to our end prouct. The Iweb was used to enhance and promote the end product and thus we created a web page about the artists, for updates on the single and other events and general trivia on the artists keeping everything posted and up to date. We used facebook to promote the single as it directly reached our audience in a less time consuming and free way, survey monkey was used to gain peoples opinions on the video and let us know what can/needs to improve and what went well, at they liked, diked etc.

Individual Evaluation - Frederick Mokoso

This is my independent evaluation, the questions I will be examining and answering are;
 1. In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
 3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
 4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

  1. In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This year’s media product involved me creating a music video. The song our group decided to do was 'R.Kelly duet with Usher - Same Girl'. Having watched many music videos beforehand we understood what we had to include into our own video to make sure it was successful. Our aim was to include a variety of media conventions which would relate to both our music video and our music artists in order to show a modern day music video which would appeal to our target audience. We included fragmentation of the body, examples of this is the girl's lips and legs. Fragmentation of the body was used as it’s a way of showing sexual objectification and this would appeal to teenage boys who are part of our target audience.

As in today’s world a high percentage of music videos show girls as a sexual object. You could argue that the music video shows intersexuality(art recognizing art) which is shown when Usher and R.Kelly are singing the chorus and at certain times look straight into the camera as if they were expressing themselves to the audience. We also integrated many high class logos such as Ralph Lauren, Mercedes Benz as well as filming parts of the video in high class bars and restaurants. This down to both the real Usher and R.Kelly comporting themselves in a high class manner, so we had to make sure that Fred (R.Kelly) and Daniel (Usher) portrayed this to our target audience as many of them see these two artist as role models and like to copy there sense of style and living as much as possible, so we knew that this would keep them interested. In our video we have shown controversy as in the original video both artists are black, but we decided to star a white male as one of the roles. The reason for doing this is due to they not being many duets featuring one black male and one white male. It was also done so that the music video was different and kept our target audience interested.

 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

With the main product being our music video, we combined many aspects of ancillary texts to develop the promotion of Usher and R.Kelly. We have created a website which shows our audience many different things on both artists, e.g. pictures of them, biographies and many other things, but as you can see the font and colour that has been used on the website, is the same that has been used on the CD covers. This was due to consistency being very important to us as it appears professional and has some sort of high class, but more importantly it links everything together which is what we have been going for.

3. What have you learned from the audience feedback?

After interviewing three girls and three boys, I have learnt that overall our target audience are very much pleased with our music video but had a small number of criticisms for us. For example one was when the audience’s attention was distracted for a matter of seconds when one artist took out a phone that was quite old and looked tacky which does fit in with the style of the artists being high class. This has made me understand that the smallest of things are scrutinised, and because of them could make the audience dislike your work. Although on the good side our audience were impressed with the way both artists presented themselves as Usher and R.Kelly in terms of their acting i.e. expressing their emotion via their body language, their attire and many other things. Overall our audience said that we interpreted ‘same girl’ very well.

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In the construction and research phase we used many media technologies for e.g., facebook, prezi, survey monkey, music metric, and many more. This helped find out who would watch our video, who are the artists fanbase e.g. are they more likely to be girls or guys, what age, where from, all these minute details were researched upon so we could get the best possible idea of what we were going to do to cater to our audience. In the planning and evaluation programmes such as Iweb, Prezi, Adobe Premier, were used were used a lot. Adobe premiere was one of the main softwares we used as with this software we edited our music video. Facebook was used to promote our video as i found out that facbook is the leading social network, and i knew that most of our target audience are always on this website.
